Turntable Pre-Amplifiers
Browse our range of turntable pre-amplifiers at Deck Converters, including phono preamps for vinyl decks, DJ turntables, home audio systems and recording setups. A turntable pre-amplifier, also known as a phono preamp or phono stage, boosts the low-level signal from a turntable so it can be used with mixers, amplifiers, active speakers or audio interfaces.
Many turntables output a phono-level signal, which is much quieter than a standard line-level signal. Without a suitable phono preamp, your turntable may sound very quiet, thin or distorted when connected to equipment that does not have a dedicated phono input.
A good turntable pre-amplifier helps deliver a cleaner, stronger signal, making it an important accessory for vinyl listening, DJ setups, sampling, recording and home audio systems.
Phono Preamps for Turntables
Turntable pre-amplifiers are useful when connecting a vinyl deck to equipment without a built-in phono input. This may include powered speakers, modern amplifiers, audio interfaces, recorders, DJ controllers or mixers with line-level inputs only.
Our turntable pre-amplifier range may include:
- Phono preamps
- MM phono stages
- Turntable pre-amplifiers
- Vinyl preamps for home audio
- Preamps for DJ turntables
- USB phono preamps
- Recording preamps
- Compact preamps for active speakers
- RCA phono preamp adapters
- Turntable connection accessories
When Do You Need a Turntable Pre-Amplifier?
You may need a turntable pre-amplifier if your amplifier, mixer, controller or speakers do not have a dedicated PHONO input. If your turntable is connected to a standard LINE, AUX or CD input and sounds extremely quiet, a phono preamp is usually required.
Some turntables have a built-in preamp, often with a switch labelled PHONO / LINE. If your turntable is set to LINE, it can usually connect directly to line-level inputs. If it is set to PHONO, it needs a phono input or external pre-amplifier.

Choosing the Right Phono Preamp
When choosing a turntable pre-amplifier, check whether your cartridge is moving magnet or moving coil. Most DJ and standard hi-fi turntables use moving magnet cartridges, often listed as MM. Some higher-end hi-fi cartridges use moving coil, listed as MC, and require a compatible preamp.
For DJ and home setups, a compact MM phono preamp is usually suitable. For recording vinyl or connecting to studio equipment, you may want a model with low noise, solid build quality and reliable RCA connections.
If you are unsure which turntable pre-amplifier you need, contact Deck Converters with your turntable, cartridge and amplifier or speaker model, and we will be happy to help.
FAQ
What does a turntable pre-amplifier do?
A turntable pre-amplifier boosts the low-level phono signal from a turntable to line level, so it can be used with amplifiers, mixers, active speakers or recording equipment.
Do I need a preamp for my turntable?
You need a preamp if your turntable outputs a phono signal and your amplifier, mixer or speakers do not have a dedicated phono input. If your turntable has a built-in preamp, you may not need an external one.
Why is my turntable very quiet?
If your turntable sounds very quiet when connected to a line, AUX or CD input, it probably needs a phono preamp. Turntables with phono output are much quieter than normal line-level audio sources.
What is the difference between phono and line?
Phono is the low-level signal produced by many turntables. Line is the stronger signal used by most audio equipment, such as CD players, mixers, active speakers and amplifiers.
Can I connect a turntable directly to active speakers?
Only if the turntable has a built-in preamp or the active speakers have a phono input. Otherwise, you will need an external turntable pre-amplifier between the turntable and speakers.
What is an MM phono preamp?
An MM phono preamp is designed for moving magnet cartridges, which are commonly used on DJ turntables and many standard vinyl decks.
What is an MC phono preamp?
An MC phono preamp is designed for moving coil cartridges, which are usually found on higher-end hi-fi turntable setups. Always check cartridge compatibility before purchasing.
Can I use a phono preamp with DJ turntables?
Yes, a phono preamp can be used with DJ turntables when connecting to equipment without phono inputs.
Do Technics turntables need a preamp?
Classic Technics SL-1200 and SL-1210 turntables normally output a phono-level signal, so they need either a mixer/amplifier with phono inputs or an external phono preamp.
Can a phono preamp improve sound quality?
Yes, a good-quality phono preamp can help provide a cleaner, stronger signal with lower noise, especially when compared with very basic or poorly matched preamps.
